A New Toy!

Well, I bought myself a birthday present this year and finally made the jump to DSLR! I picked up a new Nikon D40 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G and 55-200mm f/4-5.6G lenses, and it finally came in the mail! I'm really excited to start exploring all the features and getting to know SLR photography! Any tips, especially from users of this camera, would be much appreciated!

Congrats on the camera, even if it isn't a Canon. (just kidding) ;)
Tips: carry a small notebook to write any notes, settings, etc., buy UV protector filters for your lenses, and read "UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE" by Bryan Peterson. And most importantly, take LOTS and LOTS of pictures. Experiment with the Shutter-Priority, Aperture-Priority, and Manual modes. Have fun! Looking forward to see what you come up with. :)

I found some fountains yesterday and started playing with shutter-priority with some cool results, and then played with Aperture on a field of shrubs. It's great having such control now, and I love the feeling of having a lot to learn. Thanks again, and hope you like the upcoming shots!

I chose a Nikon as my first DSLR, only had it a week and I'm loving it! I've not tried the manual setting yet, still getting to grips with where everything is. Have lot's of fun, looking forward to seeing you photo's.

Have fun with the new toy - as others have said, experiment as much as possible (easy with digital since you don't have to pay to develop!!).

Hi bud I have made over 10k shot with my D40 for now. Ive covered many events, have done lot of macro with 105mm-vr lens of nikon, lot of landscape, lots of portrait, and seriously its a GREAT camera, a little gem. Almost weightless, it is fun to carry the D40 almost everywhere. I have shot a lot with friends of mine that use canon mostly. Im the president of a university photo club and with experience now, I can say that we took, with a big majority, photo that I have made over the canon photos that my friends took over the same event. Well I am pretty sure that you will love your purchase. If you have any question do not hesitate !
